Maxwell Sweeney

Bachelor of Counselling. NZAC Registered

Kia ora, I'm Maxwell, a counsellor based in East Christchurch.

I specialise in supporting people who identify as male from young adulthood onward.

I have particular training to help those dealing with addiction, bereavement, childhood trauma, and relationship stress.

While these are areas I feel privileged to work in often, I welcome clients of all genders and from all walks of life. My values and life experience grant me the space to support individuals who feel caught in the negative patterns of life.

If something’s weighing on you, I’m here to help.

About Me

My journey to counselling practice started when I moved to New Zealand from the UK. I began working for Nova Trust Alcohol and Other Drug Centre as a Support Worker and learned the intense challenges addiction can bring. It was in this role that I decided to upskill, and use my love for connecting with others in a career path

Since then, I have completed my three year training at Laidlaw College, learning to integrate Person-Centred and Narrative therapy skills.

I have been working extensively at the Tane Whai Ora, Canterbury Men’s Centre. It is here that I have come face to face with the massive array of challenges men face in the modern era. These include porn and substance addiction, relationship struggles, and childhood trauma.
